UI UX Pro Max vs Frontend Design: which should you use?
Use Frontend Design (76, Recommended, grade A) for a distinctive visual direction with zero setup. Use UI UX Pro Max (68, Conditional, grade B) for industry-matched palettes and accessibility rules. It needs Python.
- UI UX Pro Max: Conditional, 68, safety grade B, confidence Moderate, reviewed 2026-09-30 at v2.15.0 (commit 09170ee).
- Frontend Design: Recommended, 76, safety grade A, confidence Moderate, reviewed 2026-09-30 at commit 8a1541c (no tag).
UI UX Pro Max fits developers who want an industry-picked palette, font pairing and accessibility checklist before coding. The evidence sits in the full UI UX Pro Max verdict. Frontend Design fits a new landing page, marketing site or prototype built from a loose brief. Its users want a deliberate visual direction instead of the model's stock look. The case is set out in our Frontend Design skill review.
The only direct head-to-head comes from note.com's AI agent lab, dated 2026-05. Testers ran Opus 4.7 across three industries. They preferred Frontend Design twice and UI UX Pro Max once. That run predates Frontend Design's rewrite (#1713, merged 2026-09-03) and UI UX Pro Max v2.15.0 (2026-08-13).
Each skill has one clear strength. UI UX Pro Max turns vague briefs into specific tokens, such as hex palettes with on-colour pairs. It adds font pairings, spacing scales and anti-patterns. Its priority table puts contrast, touch targets and focus states first. Frontend Design names concrete failure looks with hex values. It forces a token plan that is reviewed against the brief before any code.
What changed since our review?
- UI UX Pro Max has 9 commits after 09170ee, the latest dated 2026-10-15, and no release after v2.15.0.
- Commit 477bcb2 fixes the Cursor copy that pointed at an empty Quick Reference (#509).
- New installers cover Amazon Q (#521), OpenClaw (#527) and Copilot Agent Skill (#533). Issues #263, #446 and #457 stay open.
- Frontend Design's folder is unchanged since 2026-09-03, and PRs #1806 and #1663 stay open.
Both verdicts stand unchanged after a GitHub check on 2026-10-21.
How do UI UX Pro Max and the Frontend Design skill differ?
UI UX Pro Max is a design database: five Python scripts search CSV catalogs of styles, palettes and fonts. The Frontend Design skill is one 71-line text file that pushes a bespoke direction.
UI UX Pro Max works in four steps, per its SKILL.md:
- Analyse the user's request.
- Generate a design system: palette, font pairing, style and landing pattern.
- Run extra searches for more detail.
- Apply the guidelines for the chosen stack.
The search is BM25-style keyword ranking over local CSV files, using only the Python standard library. Frontend Design casts the agent as a studio design lead instead. It names five stock page looks, with hex values, for the agent to avoid. The agent then writes a token plan and checks it against the brief before any code. Three gaps in the scores explain most of the verdict difference.
Setup friction shows the widest gap, 63 against 92. UI UX Pro Max needs Python 3 and shell execution. Each search.py call triggers a permission prompt in Claude Code by default. In issue #484, default permissions refused all 83 search.py calls.
Compatibility scores 62 against 80. The core SKILL.md calls its scripts through ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT} paths. That variable is empty outside a plugin install, so the path does not resolve. Open-design issue #1949 shows an agent building from scratch when search.py did not run.
Maintainability is UI UX Pro Max's only universal lead, 80 against 72. It shipped 14 releases in the 90 days before review, and 41 in 12 months. Frontend Design has no tags, and outside fixes #1806, #1663 and #978 sit unmerged.
Both skills have Tessl evals, and those numbers do not rank them. UI UX Pro Max scored 1.86x across 2 scenarios. Frontend Design scored 1.27x on average across 3 different scenarios.
Efficiency favours Frontend Design, 62 against 70. UI UX Pro Max loads about 3,992 instruction tokens before any search output. Each search then prints a large block back into context. Its 3.6 MB folder ships tests and font and icon catalogs that #484 found unused. Tessl gives both skills 3/5 for conciseness.
Universal scores run from 0 to 100. The weighting is explained in how we score design skills.
| Measure | UI UX Pro Max | Frontend Design |
|---|---|---|
| Effectiveness | 72 | 78 |
| Reliability | 60 | 70 |
| Safety | 88 | 95 |
| Efficiency | 62 | 70 |
| Compatibility | 62 | 80 |
| Maintainability | 80 | 72 |
| Setup friction | 63 | 92 |
| Instruction weight vs value (job-specific) | 62 | 70 |
When is UI UX Pro Max the better choice than Frontend Design?
UI UX Pro Max is the better choice for a new product without a designer. It returns concrete hex palettes, font pairings, spacing and an accessibility checklist for your industry. It needs Python 3 and approvals.
- Greenfield products: Tessl's 1.86x result includes a "DataPulse Landing Page" scenario.
- Accessibility work: Tessl's second scenario is an accessibility remediation. Rule quality scores 78, against Frontend Design's engineering floor of 62.
- Stack-specific builds: the publisher claims guidance for 22 stacks. Frontend Design names no framework at all.
- Conventional looks: our review lists teams that want distinctive art direction as a poor fit. Industry-typical defaults are its home ground.
A skiln.co review ran three tests against stock Claude Code. It reported a more distinct landing page, better charts and a touch-target audit. We rate that review as weak evidence.
Four findings hold it at Conditional. Issue #263, accepted and still open, reports busier pages that bury key content. The verdict page tracks UI UX Pro Max's open layout bug and its fix status. Issue #446 reports a redesign that made an existing site worse. Issue #484 measured 50% trigger recall on Haiku 4.5 over 200 attempts. Its script paths resolve only under a plugin install.
The skill runs local Python scripts, so read our guide to vetting skills that run scripts first. Test it yourself in one session:
Install it the way your team would, ask the agent for one landing page and one redesign of an existing page, and check whether search.py ran and whether key content stays above the fold.
When is Frontend Design the better choice than UI UX Pro Max?
Frontend Design is the better choice for a page that avoids an industry-typical look, or a setup without Python. It needs no install steps beyond a folder. Testers preferred it in two of three industries.
- Distinctive direction: it names five stock looks and pushes bespoke palettes and typefaces. The note.com run preferred it in 2 of 3 industries, before the rewrite.
- Zero setup: setup friction scores 92 against 63, with no Python and no permission prompts.
- Any install layout: it is a plain SKILL.md. UI UX Pro Max's script path breaks outside plugin installs.
- Restyling caution: neither skill is proven on redesigns. UI UX Pro Max has two regression reports (#263, #446). Frontend Design's restyle use is a publisher claim only.
Frontend Design has three recorded limits. An outside eval found pill buttons on 10 of 21 Opus 5.5 pages (#1808). Fix PR #1806 is still unmerged. It has no mode for an existing design system, and PR #1663 adding one is open. Its engineering floor scores 62, since focus and reduced motion get a sentence or two. Reviewers at wmedia.es and on Hacker News say it raises the floor. They add that output still converges on defaults without an explicit brief. The plan-and-review pass adds output tokens and turns (our estimate). The evidence for each sits in Frontend Design's known gaps. Test it yourself with three briefs:
Run three of your own no-direction briefs with and without the skill and count stock tells such as pill buttons, cream backgrounds and ALL-CAPS eyebrows.
Can you use Frontend Design and UI UX Pro Max together?
Yes, you can use both. UI UX Pro Max's maintainer suggests Frontend Design for the plan, then UI UX Pro Max for the details. No test has run both together, and their palette advice conflicts.
Issue #63 asked how to combine the two skills. It opened and closed on 2026-01-12. The maintainer replied: "use frontend-design to make an overall plan first, then ui-ux-pro-max to fulfill it". Claude Code loads several skills at once and applies each by its description (Claude Code docs, accessed 2026-10-19).
Our reviews support a two-step split:
- Write the token plan and visual direction with Frontend Design.
- Check that plan against UI UX Pro Max's accessibility rules before any code.
Four caveats apply:
- Colour conflict: UI UX Pro Max returns industry-typical palettes and fonts, while Frontend Design pushes bespoke ones. Decide which skill owns colour and type before the first prompt.
- Context cost: each search prints about 1K to 3K tokens (our estimate), and each call can need an approval.
- Trigger gaps: UI UX Pro Max fired on half of relevant prompts in #484, so invoke it by name.
- Reproduction gaps: note.com tested the two skills separately, and no one has published a run of both together.
Setup for a combined session is in using two skills in one Claude Code session.
What are the alternatives to UI UX Pro Max and Frontend Design?
Three alternatives to UI UX Pro Max and Frontend Design cover nearby jobs. They are Impeccable (67, Conditional), Taste Skill (62, Conditional) and Emil Design Engineering (76, Recommended). Impeccable polishes an existing UI.
| Skill | Verdict | Grade | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Impeccable verdict | Conditional, 67 | C | Critique, audit and polish of an existing web interface |
| Taste Skill review | Conditional, 62 | B | A ban list and a design-read step for React or Next.js landing pages |
| Emil Design Engineering verdict | Recommended, 76 | A | Reviewing UI animation code against easing, duration and transform rules |
Each alternative has its own limits. Impeccable downloads and runs a binary engine, and its hooks fail under PowerShell on Windows. Taste Skill declares dashboards out of scope, and its body runs to about 22K tokens. Emil Design Engineering reviews motion code and skips React Native work (PR #15).
Every design skill is ranked in all design skills by verdict.
Common questions
Is UI UX Pro Max safe to install?
Yes, at safety grade B: five local standard-library Python scripts, no network or credentials, writes only with --persist. All three skills.sh audits pass for both skills, and Frontend Design holds grade A.
How do you install each skill?
UI UX Pro Max installs with /plugin marketplace add nextlevelbuilder/ui-ux-pro-max-skill, then /plugin install ui-ux-pro-max@ui-ux-pro-max-skill. Frontend Design installs with npx skills add https://github.com/anthropics/skills --skill frontend-design, and each verdict page has full steps.
Does UI UX Pro Max need Python?
Yes: Python 3 and shell access run its search over the bundled CSV catalogs. Without them it falls back to its static rules, while Frontend Design needs nothing.
Do UI UX Pro Max and Frontend Design work in Codex or Cursor?
No, not on our evidence: both are verified only in Claude Code (see Claude Code skills ranked by verdict). UI UX Pro Max claims Codex and Cursor support, while Frontend Design claims only Claude surfaces.
Is UI UX Pro Max better than Frontend Design?
No, not overall: UI UX Pro Max scores 68 (Conditional) against Frontend Design's 76 (Recommended). It is stronger for industry-matched tokens and accessibility rules (78 against 62).
