Claude PowerPoint skill review: is Anthropic's PPTX skill worth it?
Yes. Anthropic's PPTX skill lets Claude create, edit and read PowerPoint decks, then render each slide to check it. We rate it Recommended with caveats, 71/100, at Moderate confidence. Helper-script defects and Keynote failures are the caveats.

Is there a PowerPoint skill for Claude?
Yes, there is an official PowerPoint skill for Claude, called pptx. It lets Claude create decks with pptxgenjs, edit template decks at the XML level and read slides with markitdown. It renders every slide for visual checks.
An Agent Skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file that an agent loads when a task matches it. Our guide to what an Agent Skill is covers the format. The pptx skill is that format applied to .pptx files. The pptx skill triggers on any mention of a deck, slides or a presentation. In the Claude API, the platform docs describe it in four words: "Create and edit presentations".
It sits in the anthropics/skills repository next to 3 other document skills: DOCX, PDF and XLSX. The folder holds instructions, Python helpers and Office XML schemas. Claude reads the instructions and runs the helpers inside code execution.
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Publisher | Anthropic |
| Path | skills/pptx in anthropics/skills |
| Files | 56: SKILL.md, LICENSE.txt, 15 Python scripts and ISO/IEC 29500 XSD schemas |
| SKILL.md size | 5,199 tokens, measured file size per load |
| Licence | Proprietary terms in LICENSE.txt per SKILL.md; README says "source-available, not open source" |
| Licence on directories | One directory page lists Apache-2.0, which conflicts with SKILL.md |
| Version | None; reviewed at commit 8a1541c |
| Toolchain | python3, node, pptxgenjs, react-icons, react, react-dom, sharp, markitdown[pptx], Pillow, defusedxml, lxml, LibreOffice, poppler-utils |
| Optional tool | gcc, only where AF_UNIX sockets are blocked |
The tools split into 3 jobs. The pptxgenjs library writes new .pptx files in JavaScript. The markitdown tool turns slides into text in Python. LibreOffice and Poppler render slides to images, so Claude can look at its own work.
How is the PPTX skill different from Claude Slides and Claude for PowerPoint?
The PPTX skill is a file-building skill that runs in code execution. Claude Slides and Claude Design are chat products that make decks. Claude for PowerPoint is an add-in that works inside the PowerPoint app itself.
Three Anthropic products make decks, and they are easy to mix up. The Claude Academy tutorial covers Claude Slides and Claude Design. The felo.ai list ranks the add-in, not the skill.
| Product | What it is | Where it runs | Covered here |
|---|---|---|---|
| PPTX skill | An Agent Skill that writes .pptx files with code | Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude API | Yes, this verdict |
| Claude Slides and Claude Design | Chat products that build decks | Claude apps; export PPTX, PDF and Google Slides per the Academy tutorial | No |
| Claude for PowerPoint | An add-in inside Microsoft PowerPoint | PowerPoint itself; felo.ai scores it 44/60 | No |
This page reviews only the skill. The add-in and Claude Design have no verdict on our site.
Is the Claude PowerPoint skill worth installing?
Yes, it is worth installing for decks that PowerPoint users will open. The Claude PowerPoint skill scores 71/100, Recommended with caveats, at Moderate confidence. Tessl measured a 1.53x uplift, but helper scripts carry open defects and Keynote rejects output.
The skill is best for agents producing or editing decks for Microsoft PowerPoint users. Filling a company template in a Linux sandbox with LibreOffice and Node is its strongest case. It is a poor fit in 2 cases:
- Decks that must open in Apple Keynote or Quick Look without a PowerPoint round-trip.
- Windows machines without LibreOffice, where visual QA invites driving the user's own PowerPoint.
Its strength is concrete guidance. SKILL.md lists the pptxgenjs options that silently corrupt files, such as hex colours and negative shadows. It gives a careful unzip, duplicate, clean and validate loop for templates. It requires rendering every slide to check for overflow and overlap.
Its weakness is the helper scripts. Thumbnail grids mislabel slides past nine. The validator passes some files python-pptx cannot open. clean.py drops referenced slides in decks with unusual XML prefixes. Fixes for most of these sit unmerged.
Our page on how verdict scores work explains each measure below.
| Measure | Score |
|---|---|
| Effectiveness | 80 |
| Reliability | 58 |
| Safety | 66 |
| Efficiency | 68 |
| Compatibility | 58 |
| Maintainability | 52 |
| Setup friction | 62 |
| Openable-file integrity | 66 |
| Non-destructive editing | 55 |
| Template workflow fidelity | 68 |
| Design quality guidance | 72 |
| Cost of adoption | 62 |
| Instruction weight vs value | 70 |
Maintainability is the lowest score. One substantial update merged in July 2026, while dozens of pptx fix PRs stay open, including #1043 and #1231. See how it ranks among our top-rated Agent Skills by verdict.
How many tokens does the PPTX skill use?
The PPTX skill loads 5,199 tokens on every trigger, our measured file size per load. A 10-slide deck with one QA pass costs about 40,000 input and 12,000 output tokens, our estimate.
| Item | Label | Value |
|---|---|---|
| SKILL.md per load | Measured file size per load | 5,199 tokens |
| Whole folder | Measured file size | 5,566 tokens |
| Linked references | Measured file size | 367 tokens |
| 10-slide deck from notes, one QA pass | Our estimate for a typical task | 40,000 input, 12,000 output |
| Same task including the skill | Our estimate for a typical task | 46,199 input |
| Typical use | Our estimate | 3 decks per week |
The hidden cost is images. Each QA pass renders every slide to a 150-dpi image that the agent views (estimate). Every re-render after a fix repeats that cost. Tessl rates progressive disclosure 3 out of 5 and suggests moving the long design section out of SKILL.md.
Is the Claude PPTX skill safe to install?
Yes, the Claude PPTX skill is safe to install with care, at safety grade B. Its Python helpers make no network calls and use no credentials. One helper loads a compiled shim from a fixed, shared /tmp path.
The skill ships about 3,900 lines of local Python helpers, plus bundled OOXML schemas. Our review of the files at commit 8a1541c lists 10 findings:
- Files: 56, including SKILL.md, LICENSE.txt, 15 Python scripts and ISO/IEC 29500 schemas.
- Scripts: thumbnail.py, add_slide.py, clean.py, office/validate.py, office/soffice.py and shared helper modules.
- Network: only OOXML namespace URIs appear; urllib unquotes paths and sends no requests.
- Credentials: no environment-variable secrets, hooks, MCP configs or telemetry.
- Shim: soffice.py compiles a C socket shim into a fixed /tmp path, loaded via LD_PRELOAD (PR #1874, open).
- In-place edits: add_slide.py rewrites the input deck unless -o is passed, and SKILL.md warns about this.
- Zip extraction: symlink and path-traversal entries are rejected since PR #1447.
- Toolchain: Node pptxgenjs, Python markitdown, Pillow, defusedxml, lxml, LibreOffice and Poppler.
- Untrusted decks: no guidance treats extracted slide text as data rather than instructions.
- Audits on skills.sh: Gen Agent Trust Hub pass, Snyk pass, Socket warn.
The /tmp shim is the main deduction. Any process on a shared machine can place a file at that fixed path first. Run the skill in a sandbox or a single-user container. Our guide to checking a skill's scripts before install shows the same review on any skill.
What does the community report about the PPTX skill?
The community reports strong results and real defects for the PPTX skill. Tessl measured 83% impact and a 1.53x uplift over three scenarios. GitHub issues document Keynote failures, mislabelled thumbnails and a validator that passes broken files.
We weighed 18 dated reports. Four are positive, 1 is neutral and 13 are negative. Most negatives are open GitHub issues and unmerged fix PRs, which point at specific lines of code.

What are the PPTX skill's known failures?
The PPTX skill has five main known failures at commit 8a1541c. Thumbnails mislabel decks over nine slides, and the validator passes unopenable files. Keynote rejects output, clean.py can drop slides, and Windows QA closed open decks.
The worst failure is a deck reported as done that will not open or has lost slides. The five main failures, each still open on 2026-10-21:
- Thumbnail order: grids are string-sorted, so slide 10 sorts before slide 2 (PR #1844).
- Validator false pass: validate.py reports PASS for packages python-pptx cannot open (issue #1862).
- Keynote import: decks open in PowerPoint but fail in Apple Keynote (issue #1167); sanitizer PR #1231 is unmerged.
- Slide loss: clean.py treats referenced slides as orphans when a deck uses a non-p prefix (PR #1885).
- Closed user files: PowerPoint COM automation during Windows QA closed a user's open decks (issue #1523).
Four smaller defects round out the list:
- Silent add failure: add_slide.py reports success but leaves the slide unregistered on prefixed rels (PR #1919).
- Windows leftovers: clean.py leaves content-type overrides for deleted parts (issue #1805).
- Column crash: thumbnail.py crashes after a full render on --cols 0 (issue #1809).
- Docker flakiness: LibreOffice conversion fails intermittently with no retry (issue #886).
For every failure, open the finished deck in its target app before you send it.
Which agents and plans include the PowerPoint skill?
The PowerPoint skill is verified in two agents: Claude Code and Claude.ai. Anthropic ships it in the Claude API. Its sources disagree on plans: the Help Center says all plans, the README says paid plans.
| Surface | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | Verified | Our review |
| Claude.ai | Verified | Our review |
| Claude API | Claimed | Platform quickstart, skill_id pptx |
| GitHub Copilot, Antigravity, Cowork | Unknown | No published evidence |
The two official sources conflict. The Help Center skills article lists Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise with no plan limit on Anthropic skills. The anthropics/skills README says the skills are "already available to paid plans in Claude.ai". We treat Claude.ai access as unconfirmed on Free until Anthropic aligns the two.
The platform docs overview says the pre-built document skills are not built into Claude Code. The repository copy installs there through a plugin instead. Compare it with other best skills for Claude Code and the best skills for the Claude app.
How do you install the Claude PowerPoint skill?
Install the Claude PowerPoint skill in Claude Code through the document-skills plugin from the anthropics/skills marketplace. In Claude.ai, turn on code execution and it is ready. In the API, reference skill_id pptx.
Each surface has its own route. Claude Code uses a plugin, Claude.ai uses a settings toggle and the API uses a container field.
In Claude Code
- Add the marketplace:
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills. - Install the bundle:
/plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills. - Install the local tools: Node with pptxgenjs, Python with markitdown[pptx], Pillow, defusedxml and lxml, LibreOffice and poppler-utils.
The plugin installs docx, pdf, pptx and xlsx together. No requirements file ships with the skill, so the local tools are a manual step. Our guide to setting up skills in Claude Code covers plugin basics.
In Claude.ai
- Open Settings > Capabilities.
- Turn on Code execution and file creation.
- Check Customize > Skills to confirm the skill is on.
Team and Enterprise admins manage skills under Organization settings > Plugins & skills. SKILL.md says pptxgenjs and its icon packages come preinstalled in Claude's sandbox. Our walkthrough on how to enable skills in Claude.ai covers the same screens.
In the Claude API
- Add a code execution tool to the request.
- Set
container.skillsto the entry below. - Download the finished deck through the Files API.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| type | anthropic |
| skill_id | pptx |
| version | latest |
| tool | code execution tool, required |
The API container has no network access and allows no runtime installs, per the platform overview. The quickstart example builds a 5-slide deck this way.
How do you use the PowerPoint skill to build or fill a deck?
Use the PowerPoint skill by giving Claude notes for a new deck or a .pptx template to fill. It builds the slides, renders each one and fixes overflow. Open the finished deck in its target app before sharing.
The skill serves 6 tasks, grouped by our use-case label:
| Task | Label | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Create a new deck from a prompt or notes with pptxgenjs | Primary | Tessl evals; 2slides comparison |
| Fill or extend a company template at the slide-XML level | Primary | PR #1447; issues #1885, #1919 |
| Read or extract text from a .pptx for summaries | Secondary | SKILL.md markitdown workflow |
| Render slides to images for visual QA | Secondary | Issues #886, #1523, #1844 |
| Produce decks for Keynote users | Secondary, fails | Issue #1167, PR #1231 |
| Combine or split slide files, convert legacy .ppt | Claimed only | Publisher SKILL.md only |
For a new deck, paste your notes and name the slide count. Claude writes a pptxgenjs script, renders each slide and fixes text overflow. For a template, attach the .pptx file. Claude unzips it, duplicates layouts, fills slots, cleans orphans and validates the package.
Test it yourself before you trust it with a client deck:
- Fill a 12-slide company template with the skill.
- Open the result in PowerPoint.
- Open the same file in Keynote.
- Compare the thumbnail grid labels against the real slide order.
A wrong label on slides 10 to 12 confirms the thumbnail defect.
Can the PPTX skill read existing decks?
Yes, the PPTX skill reads existing decks with markitdown and extracts their text for summaries or edits. It treats slide text as content, with no guidance for untrusted decks that carry hidden instructions.
The markitdown tool turns each slide's text into Markdown. Claude then summarises or restructures it, as in Tessl's meeting-notes scenario. Treat decks from outside your team as untrusted input. Hidden slide text reaches Claude the same way as visible text.
Which Claude presentation skill is best?
Anthropic's PPTX skill is the best evaluated Claude presentation skill for editing PowerPoint files, at 71/100. Frontend Slides suits animated HTML decks. Vendor listicles rank their own tools first, so we compare verdicts instead.
Our criterion is the verdict score for producing a deck that opens in the target app. The Anthropic PPTX skill is Recommended with caveats, 71/100, safety grade B. It is best at editing and filling PowerPoint templates. Frontend Slides by zarazhangrui is best at animated single-file HTML decks, with PPTX conversion.
| Skill | Our verdict | Best at | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic PPTX | Recommended with caveats, 71 | Editing and templates | This review |
| Frontend Slides | Not rated here | Animated HTML decks | n/a |
| OpenAI Slides skill | Not evaluated | Codex decks | Named by 2slides |
| ppt-master | Not evaluated | Open-source deck builds | Named by open-design.ai |
| codex-ppt-skill | Not evaluated | Codex decks | Named by 2slides and open-design.ai |
| Felo Slides | Not evaluated | Vendor product | Ranked first by felo.ai |
The felo.ai and 2slides lists each place their own product. The open-design.ai post claims the strong options are community skills, not an official Anthropic product. We rank only what we reviewed.
Developers who want no agent layer use the libraries directly. The python-pptx library reads and writes .pptx files in Python. PptxGenJS is the JavaScript library the skill itself calls. The same bundle includes the Claude PDF skill verdict and the Claude Excel skill verdict.

Common questions
Is the PPTX skill the same as Claude for PowerPoint?
No. Claude for PowerPoint is an add-in that runs inside the PowerPoint app. The PPTX skill builds .pptx files in code execution.
Is the Claude PowerPoint skill free?
Yes, it costs nothing extra inside Claude, and its licence is source-available, not open source. Plan wording conflicts: the Help Center says all plans, the README says paid plans.
Is there a PowerPoint skill for Codex?
Yes, OpenAI publishes its own Slides skill for Codex. We have not evaluated it.
Do PPTX skill decks open in Keynote?
No, not reliably. Issue #1167 reports Keynote import failures, and sanitizer PR #1231 is unmerged.
Does the PPTX skill work in Google Slides?
Unknown. We found no published evidence, and our review lists Google Slides as untested.
