What are Claude Designer Skills?

Claude Designer Skills is MC Dean's Designer Skills Collection. It holds 111 Markdown skills and 34 commands in nine Claude Code plugins. They cover research, design systems, UX strategy, UI, interaction, prototyping, design ops and critique.

People use "Claude designer skills" for any design skill an agent loads, such as Anthropic's Frontend Design. Our verdict covers one collection: the Designer Skills Collection by Owl-Listener, the GitHub name of designer MC Dean. Each skill is a SKILL.md file, a Markdown instruction sheet. Claude Code reads it when a task matches its description. Our guide on how SKILL.md files work explains the format. Anthropic's Academy guide on design skills uses its own design-elevation skill as the teaching example. We have not reviewed that example skill.

A plugin bundles skills and commands that install as one unit. Commands are slash prompts you type, such as /start-here. Skills load on their own when a request matches their description.

Are Claude Designer Skills worth installing?

Yes, for design process work. Claude Designer Skills scores 78/100, Recommended, at Moderate confidence. Its methods are accurate and safe, but reviewers find it weaker on visual taste, and output quality is unmeasured.

The collection covers the designer's process end to end. Its maintainer fixed every 2026 load, packaging and routing defect. The main strength is plain Markdown with no runtime code. Each skill carries a use-when description and pointers to sibling skills. An INDEX.md maps tasks to skills, and a /start-here command routes you to a method. The main weakness is taste: the pack knows method better than visual style. No test compares its output with an unaided agent. The 2026 defects were in packaging, not content.

The maintainer responds fast. PR #22 merged the same day. PR #28 merged after 26 days. Issue #41 was answered and fixed within a day, with a new CI check. Closed PR #39 got a detailed explanation.

It suits designers, researchers and product teams. They get research plans, specs, handoff packages and critiques built on named frameworks. Two groups fit poorly:

  • Developers wanting visually distinctive UI code, since reviewers found the pack weaker on taste than process.
  • Teams on Cursor or other unpackaged hosts, since Cursor support sits in unmerged PR #52.

No benchmark against a no-skill baseline exists, and three questions have no published answer yet. Nobody knows whether the skills beat the base model on real briefs. Auto-trigger accuracy among 111 descriptions is unmeasured. Nobody has retested /start-here after the #48 repair.

Our page on how we score each skill sets out the criteria. For the wider field, see the best UI/UX and design skills, ranked.

How many tokens do Designer Skills use?

Installing all nine Designer Skills plugins adds an estimated 6,500 tokens of descriptions to every session. Single skill bodies run about 280 to 1,800 tokens. Selective installs keep that cost low.

Figure Tokens Label
Descriptions, all nine plugins installed about 6,500 our estimate (26 KB of descriptions)
One skill body about 280 to 1,800 our estimate from byte sizes
Anchor skill law-of-continuity 1,099 measured file size per load
Typical task: a test plan or component spec 9,000 in, 2,500 out our estimate for a typical task

SKILL.md files range from 1,125 bytes (opportunity-framework) to 7,144 bytes (conversational-ux). The four remote collections add more unscanned content when installed.

What changed since our review?

Nothing changed in Designer Skills since our 2026-09-30 review. The GitHub repo's last commit is still 9a6930c, dated 2026-09-05. Cursor packaging PR #52 remains open, so our verdict stands unchanged.

  • 2026-09-05: last commit 9a6930c, the commit we reviewed.
  • 2026-10-21: no tag or release exists, and PR #52 for Cursor is still open.
  • 2026-10-21: GitHub shows 2,979 stars, up from 2,809 at review.

How do Designer Skills compare with other Claude design skills?

Designer Skills scores highest of the Claude design skills we rated, at 78. It covers process, not visual style. Frontend Design (76) suits page generation, and Emil Design Engineering (76) suits motion review.

Skill Verdict Score Grade Job
Designer Skills (this page) Recommended 78 B research, specs, handoff, critique
Emil Design Engineering Recommended 76 A animation and interaction review
Frontend Design Recommended 76 A generating new pages with a visual direction
UI/UX Pro Max Conditional 68 B palette, font and UX-rule lookup
Impeccable Conditional 67 C critique, audit and polish of a built UI
Anthropic Design plugin Conditional 66 C critique and handoff workflow
Taste Skill Conditional 62 B anti-slop rules for landing pages

Each rival has a full review. Read Anthropic's Frontend Design verdict for page generation. For motion work, see Emil Kowalski's design engineering skill. Lookup tables live in our UI/UX Pro Max review. Audits of a built screen are covered in the Impeccable verdict. Critique and handoff sit in Anthropic's Design plugin verdict. Landing-page styling is in our Taste Skill review.

Composio and the author's launch post count 63 skills in eight plugins. That count predates the September additions. Our scan at 9a6930c found 111 skills, 34 commands and nine plugins. To raise Claude Code's design output, pair a process pack like this one with a taste-focused skill.

Are Designer Skills safe to install?

Yes, Designer Skills is safe to install, with safety grade B. It holds instruction-only Markdown plus seven repo scripts that users never run. It has no credentials, hooks, MCP servers or telemetry, and four remote collections were not scanned.

Grade B means the skills hold instructions only, with a small surface left unscanned. Safety scores 92 in our criteria table. The scan found eight facts:

  • 205 files at 9a6930c: 111 SKILL.md, 34 command files, 53 reference files and nine plugin manifests.
  • SKILL.md files total about 300 KB.
  • Seven scripts handle CI and packaging, and no skill invokes them.
  • check-marketplace.py contacts GitHub only with an explicit --network flag.
  • Plugin manifests hold only author and GitHub URLs, with no MCP config, hooks or credentials.
  • Skills write nothing by themselves; commands produce documents as the host allows.
  • The root marketplace pulls 24 plugins from four other Owl-Listener repos, which we did not scan.
  • Skills fetch no external content, so prompt-injection exposure stays limited to what you paste.

For the checks to run on any skill, see how to vet a skill before you install it.

What do users and maintainers report about Designer Skills?

Users and maintainers report packaging bugs in Designer Skills, each fixed quickly. Enabling all plugins once gave 24 load errors (PR #22). The /start-here router misrouted 3 of 5 test inputs before repair (#48).

These are the 13 dated reports we weighed, from GitHub, Composio and skills.sh. Five are strong, listed first.

Date Source Claim Strength
2026-06 PR #22 Enabling all plugins produced 24 load errors from shorthand git-subdir URLs. strong
2026-07 Issue #27 Copilot CLI 1.0.65+ silently dropped four commands over an unquoted argument-hint. strong
2026-07 PR #28 An outside contributor's quoting fix for Copilot CLI was merged. strong
2026-09 PR #47 Marketplace text promised five unshipped capabilities; the headline was off by 32 skills. strong
2026-09 PR #48 The /start-here router failed 3 of 5 awkward test inputs before repair. strong
2026-04 Issue #12 A third party wrapped the collection into a design-lifecycle plugin. weak
2026-05 Composio A reviewer rates the pack strong on process, weaker on taste. weak
2026-05 Issue #19 A user did not know how to sequence skills for a greenfield project. weak
2026-05 Issue #20 visual-critique became a hosted demo; the maintainer says it came from practice, not data. weak
2026-09 Issue #41 Docs pointed a user to a non-existent ux-strategy repository. weak
2026-09 PR #45 The linter now parses YAML and checks loading across runtimes. weak
2026-09 PR #52 An outside contributor proposed Cursor packaging, still unmerged. weak
2026-09 skills.sh About 175.3K total installs, with 1.8K to 2.8K per popular skill. weak

Composio's May 2026 list calls the pack "strong on process, weaker on taste".

Issues #19 and #43 asked where to begin. INDEX.md and the /start-here router now answer that question.

What are Designer Skills' known failures?

Designer Skills has no open load or routing failure at the reviewed commit. Its known limits are weaker visual taste and unmeasured auto-triggering among 111 descriptions. Cursor packaging waits on PR #52.

The worst failure for this pack is a silent one. A skill fails to load or routes to the wrong method. The agent then gives generic advice that looks authoritative.

Fixed before our review:

  • Load errors: PR #22 repaired 24 failed cross-repo plugin loads.
  • Dropped commands: PR #28 fixed four Copilot CLI commands lost in issue #27.
  • Bad docs pointer: issue #41 was fixed within a day, with a new CI check.
  • Misrouting: PR #48 repaired three /start-here failures from a 5-input test.

PR #45 then added YAML-parsing lint and cross-runtime load checks to stop #27 recurring.

Still open at 9a6930c:

  • Taste: Composio rates the pack weaker on visual style than on process.
  • Auto-trigger accuracy: nobody has measured it across 111 descriptions.
  • Cursor: packaging waits on PR #52.
  • Marketplace text: ux-strategy still lists navigation patterns and user flows held in other plugins.

Our guide on when a skill does not trigger lists the checks for a skill that fails to fire.

Do Designer Skills work in Gemini CLI, Codex and Cursor?

Yes for Gemini CLI, which gets bundled extensions, and no for Codex and Cursor. Designer Skills is verified only in Claude Code. Cursor support sits in unmerged PR #52, and Copilot CLI works since #28.

Agent Status Evidence
Claude Code Works through the plugin marketplace verified
Gemini CLI Extensions ship in the repo claimed by the publisher; no published run
Copilot CLI Commands load since the PR #28 quoting fix reported by users
Codex Reads the same format, no packaging no published run
Cursor Packaging proposed in PR #52 unmerged

How do you install Claude Designer Skills?

Install Claude Designer Skills in Claude Code with /plugin marketplace add Owl-Listener/designer-skills. Then install only the plugins you need, such as ui-design or design-research. Gemini CLI users copy the bundled extensions.

In Claude Code

  1. Add the marketplace:
/plugin marketplace add Owl-Listener/designer-skills
  1. Install one plugin at a time, using the pattern <plugin>@designer-skills:
/plugin install ui-design@designer-skills
/plugin install design-research@designer-skills

The marketplace exposes 24 more plugins from four other Owl-Listener repos. We did not scan those, so install them only after reading their files. Our walkthrough on adding plugins and skills to Claude Code covers marketplaces in detail.

In Gemini CLI and other agents

The README points Gemini CLI users to the repo's extensions folder. No published run confirms that path. Copilot CLI reads the command files since PR #28. Codex and Cursor have no packaging at 9a6930c.

How do designers use Claude Designer Skills?

Designers use Claude Designer Skills by asking for a design artefact from a short brief. Examples include a usability test plan, a component spec or a handoff package. Run /start-here when unsure which method fits.

  1. Install only the plugins your work needs.
  2. Run /start-here and describe your situation.
  3. Give a one-paragraph brief with audience, goal and constraints.
  4. Compare the output with the skill's own checklist.
  5. Iterate on the weakest section.

On skills.sh, the most installed skills are presentation-deck (2.8K), typography-scale (2.2K) and visual-hierarchy (2.2K).

Three tasks have usage evidence:

Task Who How often
Research artefacts: personas, journey maps, interview scripts, usability test plans UX researchers and designers Weekly
Developer handoff packages, QA checklists and design rationale Product designers Per feature
UI system work: type scale, colour, spacing, grids, tokens Design-system designers and frontend engineers Weekly

Two more uses are claimed by the author but not shown in any published test. One applies named UX laws such as Fitts, Hick and Gestalt to a layout. The other reads funnels against interview findings. MC Dean sets the limit in the launch post:

"This isn't a replacement for design judgment."

Anthropic's Academy design guide models good prompting: describe the task, then give Claude context.

Test it yourself before installing everything:

  • Install only ui-design and design-research.
  • Give one brief with and without /design-research:test-plan.
  • Compare both plans against the skill's own checklist.

What are the alternatives to Designer Skills?

The main alternatives to Designer Skills are Anthropic's Design plugin and Frontend Design. The Design plugin handles critique and handoff; Frontend Design generates pages. Emil Kowalski's skills cover motion, and Taste Skill covers landing-page styling.

  • Anthropic Design plugin: Conditional, 66, for critique and handoff.
  • Frontend Design: Recommended, 76, for generating pages.
  • Emil Design Engineering: Recommended, 76, for motion review.
  • Taste Skill: Conditional, 62, for landing-page styling.

These alternatives live in three repos: anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins, emilkowalski/skills and Leonxlnx/taste-skill. Julian Oczkowski's design process pack appears in Composio's list. We have not reviewed it. Browse all rated design skills for the full ranking.
