What is the Remotion skill?

The Remotion skill, Remotion Best Practices, is Remotion's official Agent Skill for coding agents. Its SKILL.md is a router to eleven sub-guides. They cover creating, previewing, captioning, mapping and rendering React videos.

Remotion is a framework to "make videos programmatically" with React code. An Agent Skill is a folder of instructions that an agent loads for matching tasks. Read what an Agent Skill is for the basics. This skill teaches an agent to write Remotion compositions.

Remotion Studio is the live preview app that ships with Remotion. The skill sets three defaults:

  • Open Studio for a live preview.
  • Render an MP4 only on explicit request.
  • Keep edits the user made outside the chat.

The router is 4,215 bytes. Its sub-guides total about 50 KB and load only when relevant. The repo holds 12 SKILL.md files: the router plus 11 focused skills. Remotion's docs list all 12 as separate skills.

Skill Focus skills.sh installs (2026-09-30)

skills.sh counted 1.7M installs across the whole bundle at review.

Is the Remotion skill worth installing?

Yes, the Remotion skill is worth installing for existing Remotion users: it scores 77/100, Recommended, at Moderate confidence. Reported import and routing bugs were fixed within about a day. Output is API-correct but visually plain.

Remotion's maintainer writes the skill. Wrong imports (remotion#11669) and dead router links (remotion#9964) were fixed within about a day. Visual output lags: one side-by-side test found compositions correct but bare. A stale global install can shadow the project copy in Claude Code (remotion#11809).

Only one independent side-by-side test exists, with no numeric quality score. See how we score each verdict, or every reviewed skill ranked by verdict.

It is a poor fit for prompt-to-video without React. Teams needing polished art direction out of the box get APIs, not visual taste.

How many tokens does the Remotion skill use?

The router is about 1,050 tokens by our estimate, from its 4,215-byte SKILL.md. Sub-guides add about 12,000 tokens, loaded only when relevant.

Figure Value Label
Router SKILL.md ~1,050 tokens (from 4,215 bytes) our estimate
Sub-guides, loaded on demand ~12,000 tokens our estimate
Typical task (15-second promo) 18,000 in / 5,000 out our estimate for a typical task
Typical use 5 invocations per week our estimate

Three hidden costs sit outside the tokens. A fresh setup downloads a headless browser. The MapTiler technique needs a MapTiler key. Lambda rendering in the SaaS sub-guide incurs AWS costs.

What changed since our review?

Remotion published version 4.0.537 on 2026-10-19, after our 2026-09-30 review of 4.0.531. Our verdict covers 4.0.531 and stays unchanged until re-review.

We checked the GitHub API on 2026-10-21:

  • Latest commit 039e8a2 landed on 2026-10-19 ("Update template").
  • The router declares version 4.0.537 and still measures 4,215 bytes.
  • remotion#11809 and remotion-dev/skills#24 are still open.
  • Stars rose from 4,783 to 5,436, and forks from 536 to 598.
  • GitHub still detects no licence file.

Every change we make to a verdict goes into our corrections and re-review log.

Is the Remotion skill safe to install?

Yes, the Remotion skill is safe to install, with safety grade B and a safety score of 88. It is mostly Markdown, plus optional Node map scripts and TypeScript assets. Its only network endpoint is MapTiler.

Our review of the files at commit a9b199e found:

  • Map prep scripts prep-geo.mjs and prep-cesium-path.mjs, plus TypeScript assets under remotion-maps/techniques.
  • One endpoint, api.maptiler.com, called by MapTilerVectorElement.ts with your REMOTION_MAPTILER_KEY.
  • That call runs only for the MapTiler technique.
  • No hooks, no MCP config and no telemetry.
  • openai.yaml manifests that hold display metadata only.
  • Repo sync scripts (scripts/*.ts) that are maintainer tooling and never get installed.

Across the repo we counted 25 script files in JavaScript and TypeScript. MapTiler is a commercial map tile provider. Read how to vet bundled scripts before you install any skill with code.

What does the community report about the Remotion skill?

The community reports about the Remotion skill show bugs fixed fast and plain visual output. Eight of 13 evidence items are rated strong. Wrong imports and dead router links were fixed within about a day.

We sampled GitHub, Hacker News and the web. The 13 items split into 9 negative, 1 positive and 3 neutral. Evidence confidence is Moderate.

What are the Remotion skill's known failures?

The Remotion skill has two known failures at commit a9b199e. A stale global install silently shadows the project copy in Claude Code (remotion#11809, still open). Compositions come out API-correct but visually plain.

  1. Global shadowing: remotion#11809, open on 2026-10-21. The agent skipped Studio and rendered an MP4.
  2. Plain visuals: skillstested.com, 2026-07. The output was a bare glyph, not a composed scene.

Fixed before the reviewed commit: remotion#11669, remotion#9964, skills#19 and skills#20. Issue remotion#11770 closed after a fix. Issue remotion#11258 closed after ten days. Issue skills#24 stays open, but all eleven links resolved at the reviewed commit.

Which agents does the Remotion skill work with?

The Remotion skill is verified to work with Claude Code, and with GPT Sol through a Codex-style client. Remotion claims four more agents: Codex, Kimi Code, Cursor and OpenCode. We found no documented runs in Claude.ai or Cowork.

How do you install the Remotion skill?

Install the Remotion skill with npx skills add remotion-dev/skills, or npx remotion skills add, inside a Remotion project. You need Node.js and npx. First renders download headless Chromium, and one fresh setup took 8m 42s.

Remotion's coding-agents doc sets up a project in these steps:

  1. Create a project: npx create-video --yes --blank my-video.
  2. Enter the folder: cd my-video.
  3. Add the skills: npx remotion skills add, or npx skills add remotion-dev/skills.
  4. Start the preview in a separate terminal: npm run dev.
  5. Start your agent: claude, codex, kimi or opencode.

Setup friction scores 75. That fresh setup ran in the skillstested.com comparison.

How do you install it in Claude Code without a stale global copy?

Install the skill at project level and start Claude Code inside that project folder. Then remove or update any global copy.

  1. Run the install inside the Remotion project.
  2. Start Claude Code from that folder.
  3. Delete or update any global Remotion skill.

Warning: a stale global copy still wins over the project copy (remotion#11809, open on 2026-10-21). Learn to fix a skill that does not load. The plugin route is one command: claude plugin install remotion@remotion. Read our guide to setting up skills in Claude Code for general setup.

How do you use the Remotion skill?

Use the Remotion skill by asking your agent for a composition, such as a 10-second title card. The skill routes the agent to the right sub-guide. Studio opens for preview, and rendering waits for you.

Three prompts match the documented use cases:

  • Create a 15-second product promo with our logo and three feature lines.
  • Import clip.mp4 and add TikTok-style captions.
  • Trim the first five seconds and crop the video to square.

Test it yourself: install into an empty Remotion project and ask for a 10-second title card. Check that it compiles and opens in Studio without rendering.

Remotion's community prompt page shows 12 community prompts per page. Animated maps and SaaS apps with Player or Lambda are publisher claims only.

What are the best Remotion skills and alternatives?
